Non-Traditional Credit

Ohio University recognizes that college-level learning can occur in a variety of settings outside traditional classroom environments. Through partnerships with career centers, high schools, professional organizations, and workforce training providers, students may be eligible to receive transfer credit for completed programs, certificates, or credentials. The sections below outline the types of non-traditional credit that may be accepted at OHIO.

Industry-Recognized Credential Transfer Assurance Guides (ITAGs)

Credit may be awarded for select industry-recognized credentials through Ohio’s statewide Industry-Recognized Credential Transfer Assurance Guides (ITAGs). If you’ve earned an approved credential, you may be eligible to receive college-level credit!

Need to know what documents to submit?
Head to the statewide ITAG website and click on your credential. You'll find details on what you need to send to Ohio University to receive credit.

American Council on Education Credit Recommendations

OHIO awards credit for alternative credit options that have been recommended for college-credit by the American Council on Education (ACE). We evaluate courses individually to determine if we can award direct equivalency or elective credit.

How to Receive Credit for ACE Coursework:

  1. Request that the awarding institution (e.g., Sophia Learning) send your transcript to ACE (not directly to OHIO).
  2. ACE will generate digital badges within 7–14 days.
  3. Create an account with Credly or Accredible to access your ACE digital badges.
  4. Submit a free ACE transcript — including credit recommendations — to Ohio University: admissions@ohio.edu
