OCOM 8010 - Family Medicine


Family Medicine is a four-week rotation designed to provide experiences in a family medicine setting that highlight the unique role of the family medicine physician and the principles and practice of family medicine. Upon completion of this rotation, the student will appreciate the family medicine practitioners role as the physician of first contact who delivers holistic, family-oriented, comprehensive, continuous medical care to patients entering the health care system; enhance history and physical exam, diagnostic, procedural, OMT, interpersonal communication, psychosocial, and practice management skills to improve patient care; develop greater confidence in providing traditional quality medical care in ambulatory settings.

Course Outcomes
  • demonstrate appropriate history and physical exam skills, including a thorough osteopathic assessment of a patient, and basic osteopathic manipulative techniques, as appropriate
  • demonstrate appropriate interpersonal communication skills that build rapport with patients and their families and facilitate a positive physician-patient relationship.
  • demonstrate common clinical procedures, tests and skills
  • describe the indications, contraindications, interactions, pharmacokinetics, side effects, and special instructions to patients for drugs commonly prescribed for patients seen in family medicine
  • develop an effective treatment plan for common conditions, utilizing evidence-based medicine research strategies to access and interpret supportive clinical data
  • discuss the diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment, and prevention strategies for common conditions and diseases
  • employ patient safety measures in patient management
