JOUR 2311 - Introduction to Multiplatform Reporting and Writing


Basics of information gathering, reporting, writing, and multiplatform publication of news and strategic communications. Either 2310 or 2311 satisfies journalism core requirements.

Requisites: Journalism major and grade of 75% or higher on School of Journalism grammar exam or C or better in JOUR 1330 and WARNING: not JOUR 2310

Learning Outcomes:
  • Define news.
  • Distill a story or event into its most important elements Write news stories using the basic forms, such as the inverted pyramid with a summary lead.
  • Identify the basic elements of a news story, including the who, what, where, when, why, how and what’s next.
  • Learn the common ethical issues that arise in writing news stories, including those that deal with diversity, gender, and freedom of speech.
  • Learn to gather information and write news stories with careful attention to accuracy and clarity of writing.
  • Shoot and edit short videos.
  • Understand how news writing skills apply across platforms, including in video, audio, pictures Use online tools, such as video, hypertext, images, and graphics to tell news stories and convey information effectively.
  • Understand how this definition applies across different media, especially online.
