DANC 2700 - Languages of Dance


Introduction to dance analysis and dance studies, with emphasis on perceiving and understanding dance in cultural and historical contexts. Students explore dance aesthetics across a range of global examples and learn to describe and analyze dances with attention to both form and function.

  • Students will be able to analyze, interpret, and evaluate artistic dance works, both historical and contemporary.
  • Students will be able to explain relationships among cultural and historical contexts in the study of dance.
  • Students will be able to discuss and write about dance as an art form, as culture, and as an academic discipline.
  • Students will be able to identify some of the most influential choreographers, works, and artistic movements of 20th and 21st century dance.
  • Students will be able to identify the aesthetic conventions of different dance genres.
  • Students will be able to recognize and describe cultural differences in practices and ideas about dance in a selection of global examples.
