MGT 2100 - Introduction to Management and Organization


Objective is to expose students to the basics of management in organizations. After completion, students should have a basic understanding of the structure, processes and behaviors that underlie the practice of management. The goal is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts and theories of management as they are applied in organizational life. Students will examine the roles and responsibilities of managers and the skills and competencies necessary for managerial success. Students will develop an understanding of the vocabulary of management as it is used in contemporary workplaces.

Requisites: COB and (ENG 1510 or 1610)
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to analyze a company at a beginning level, identify important competencies, and propose what the company should do now to compete effectively in the future.
  • Students will be able to conduct a basic industry analysis taking into consideration important environmental variables and develop a reasonable foresight for the industry.
  • Students will be able to operate effectively in a team working on unstructured business problems.
  • Students will be able to recognize, diagnose, evaluate, and recommend appropriate actions with respect to managerial functioning in organizations and group functioning within the team process.
  • Students will be able to select from among alternatives the most promising of new ventures.
  • Students will be able to describe the dynamics of teams, advantages and disadvantages of working in teams, and differences between individual and group decision-making.
  • Students will be able to explain the interaction among motivation, productivity, and value creation in a business.
  • Students will be able to describe the roles, functions, and requisite skills of the manager in business and how managers add value to businesses.
