RFM 4070 - Global Issues in Textile, Apparel, and Retail Industries


This course covers economic factors influencing retail merchandising and fashion product development industries in depth. The influence of international trade and changing technologies are addressed.

Requisites: ECON 1000, RFPD 1010 and (Jr or Sr)
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:  
  • Students will be able to articulate general perspectives of the history, structure, scope, and nature of the apparel and textile industries and acquire an understanding of U.S. apparel and textile sector as part of the world market.
  • Students will be able to explain theories of trade and understand the economic, political, and social ramifications of international trade in U.S. apparel and textile sector.
  • Students will be able to explain social responsibility issues in the apparel and textile sector and develop business ethics relevant to the career in the sector.
  • Students will be able to compare historic and contemporary opportunities and challenges confronted by producers, wholesalers, importers, retailers, and consumers within the textile and apparel industry.
  • Students will be able to describe social responsibilities and ethical practices within the industry.
  • Students will be able to analyze the manner in which the textile and apparel industry has played a key role in negotiation and formation of international trade policy.
  • Students will be able to describe the implications of historic and contemporary trade policy for domestic and foreign producers, retailers, and consumers.
  • Students will be able to describe major trends in sourcing, including production, marketing, merchandising, and consumption, of textile and apparel products and their impacts on the future of the industry.
  • Students will be able to utilize computer technology as a tool for information gathering and to critically evaluate and use the information for idea generation, decision making, and problem solving.
