Program Overview

Early childhood education prepares students to teach young children birth through eight years. In addition to being licensed to teach in public and private preschools, Head Start programs, nursery schools and child care centers, students are also licensed to teach in private and public school kindergartens and primary grades.

Admissions Information

Freshman/First-Year Admission

Students interested in the early childhood education major will enter Ohio University with a premajor code of ND8837 (premajor in early childhood). Students can apply to the major after completing specific requirements listed under Departmental-Level Requirements for Teacher Education . Enrollment in the program is limited to promote quality instruction, appropriate field placement and effective advising. Not all students who apply and meet the minimum criteria will be accepted. Contact the Office of Student Affairs for details on the early childhood restrictive admission criteria and process.

Change of Program Policy

If you are enrolled in a different major or college at Ohio University, and wish to transfer into this major, you must either declare the premajor code, ND8837 (if you don’t meet the admission criteria) or apply for admission (if you do meet them). You must have at least a 2.0 GPA to declare the non degree code. To be admitted to the major, you must apply and be accepted after successful completion of the admission criteria.

External Transfer Admission

If you should transfer from another institution into this major, you must either declare the premajor code, ND8834 (if you don’t meet the admission criteria) or apply for admission (if you do meet them). You must have at least a 2.75 GPA to declare the non degree code. To be admitted to the major, you must apply and be accepted after successful completion of the admission criteria. You will be required to submit a official copy of your transcripts from all other institutions from which you have transferred credits.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Prepares candidates to teach children birth through eight years. In addition to being licensed to teach in public and private preschool programs, Head Start programs, nursery schools and child care centers, candidates are also licensed to teach in private and public kindergartens and primary grades. The program is NCATE accredited and Ohio licensure can be transferred to other states that have reciprocity with the Ohio Department of Education.
