Program Overview
The Adolescent to Young Adult (AYA) program includes 7 majors: Integrated Language Arts, Integrated Mathematics, Integrated Social Studies, Integrated Science, Earth/Space Science, Life Science and Physical Science. Regardless of the college of the university from which you will graduate, if you wish to be licensed through Ohio University to teach integrated language arts, you must complete the following program and earn passing scores on the Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) exams and a Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA). This major prepares you for an Ohio four-year Resident Educator teaching license that qualifies you to teach all science courses in grades 7-12.
Admissions Information
Freshman/First-Year Admission
All students pursuing teacher education programs at Ohio University are subject to the Selective Admission and Retention Program in teacher education. Criteria and procedures are available in the Office of Student Affairs, McCracken Hall 124. Admission to Professional Education is required before taking any education courses at the 2000 level or higher. Requirements for admission to Professional Education include:
- successful completion of 30 hours with a 3.00 GPA or higher,
- a Tier I Math course (1M) with a grade of C (2.0) or higher,
- a Tier I Freshmen Composition course (1E) with a grade of C (2.0) or higher,
- EDTE 1500, Introduction to Teacher Education with a grade of C (2.0) or higher, and
- PSY 1010, General Psychology with a grade of C (2.0) or higher.
Generally, you apply for admission to Professional Education during the second semester of your freshman year. Athens campus students must attend a group meeting arranged by the Office of Student Affairs, McCracken Hall 124, prior to submitting application for Admission to Professional Education.
Admission to Advanced Standing in Professional Education is required before taking any education courses at the 3000-level or higher. Applications for admission to Advanced Standing in Professional Education should be submitted a semester after which students will have earned at least 60 credits in the major.
Regional campus students should check with their Office of Student Services or the Dean’s office on the regional campus for information.
