Program Overview
The modern language programs for educators include French, German and Spanish. Regardless of the college of the university from which you will graduate, to be licensed through Ohio University to teach one of the modern foreign languages in Ohio, you must complete the following program and earn passing scores on the Ohio Assessments for Educators (OAE) exams and a Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA). This major prepares you for an Ohio four-year Resident Educator teaching license that qualifies you to teach German in grades Pre-K-12. Language majors will be required to pass an oral proficiency examination in the major before licensure.
Admissions Information
Freshman/First-Year Admission
All students pursuing teacher education programs at Ohio University are subject to the Selective Admission and Retention Program in teacher education. Criteria and procedures are available in the Office of Student Affairs, Lindley Hall. Admission to Teacher Candidacy is required before taking any education courses at the 2000 level or higher. Requirements for admission to Teacher Candidacy include:
- successful completion of 30 hours with a 3.00 GPA or higher,
- a Tier I Math course (1M) with a grade of C (2.0) or higher,
- a Tier I Freshmen Composition course (1E) with a grade of C (2.0) or higher,
- EDTE 1500 , Introduction to Teacher Education with a grade of C (2.0) or higher, and
- PSY 1010 , General Psychology with a grade of C (2.0) or higher.
Generally, you apply for admission to Teacher Candidacy during the second semester of your freshman year. Athens campus students must attend a group meeting arranged by the Office of Student Affairs, Lindley Hall, prior to submitting application for Admission to Teacher Candidacy.
Admission to Advanced Standing in Teacher Candidacy is required before taking any education courses at the 3000-level or higher. Applications for admission to Advanced Standing in Teacher Candidacy should be submitted a semester after which students will have earned at least 60 credits in the major.
Regional campus students should check with their Office of Student Affairs or the Dean’s office on the regional campus for information.

Complete the following courses with a grade of C (2.0) or better:
- EDTE 1500 - Introduction to Teacher Education Credit Hours: 2.0
- ENG 1510 - Writing and Rhetoric I Credit Hours: 3.0
- PSY 1010 - General Psychology Credit Hours: 3.0
AYA Teacher Candidacy
Complete the following courses with a 2.75 GPA and a grade of C (2.0) or higher in each. Methods courses are included in the 2.75 overall GPA requirement for AYA teacher candidacy:
- EDTE 2000 - Learning and Human Development Credit Hours: 3.0
- EDTE 2010 - Characteristics of Learners with Exceptionalities Credit Hours: 3.0
- EDTE 2020 - Field Experience in Education Credit Hours: 1.0
- EDCT 2030 - Technological Applications in Education Credit Hours: 3.0
- EDCS 3010 - Education and Cultural Diversity Credit Hours: 3.0
- EDSE 3500 - Secondary School Planning and Instruction Credit Hours: 3.0
- EDSE 3510 - Secondary School Managing and Monitoring of Learning Credit Hours: 3.0
- EDTE 3730 - Instructional Adaptations for Adolescent-Young Adult Learners with Exceptionalities & Diverse Needs Credit Hours: 3.0
Professional Internship in Teaching
Complete the following courses with a grade of C (2.0) or higher in EDPL 4650:
- EDPL 3600 - Field Experience Credit Hours: 1.0-3.0
- EDPL 4610 - Professional Internship in Middle Childhood Credit Hours: 6.0
- EDPL 4630 - Professional Internship in Adolescence to Young Adult Credit Hours: 6.0
- EDPL 4650 - Professional Internship Seminar Credit Hours: 3.0
Methods Courses
Complete the following courses with a grade of C (2.0) or better. Methods courses are included in the 2.75 overall GPA requirement for AYA teacher candidacy:
