Program Overview

To receive a B.S.Ed. in Special Education and licensure as an Intervention Specialist, you must complete one of the professional preparation programs for teaching students with special needs and receive passing scores on the relevant Ohio Assessment for Educators (OAE) and a Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA). Students should also use the four-year plan on the program website and/or consult with their advisor about scheduling as early as possible. Moderate to Intensive majors are advised to complete content courses in science, and/or social studies, and/or mathematics to pass the Middle Childhood OAE content tests in addition to the reading OAE to have HQT areas upon graduation.  All licensure programs are subject to any changes in requirements as set forth by the Ohio Educator Licensure Board.

Admissions Information

Freshman/First-Year Admission

As with all majors in Education, candidates must meet the requirements for Teacher Candidacy. In addition, those wishing to enter Special Education programs must also submit an application for Selective Admission in Special Education during Fall semester of the sophomore year and be accepted and eligible (meet all requisites) for entry into their junior year Special Education Block 2 courses.

Enrollment in these programs is limited to promote quality instruction, appropriate field placement, and effective advising. The selective admission process for Special Education includes application for admission to Teacher Candidacy, review of your academic record, (minimum GPA 3.0) and dispositions, and your professional statement. Admission applications are available on the Web and should be submitted online. The application deadline is posted on the e-News and is typically one month prior to priority registration week. 

Admission to Teacher Candidacy

Candidates must be admitted to Teacher Candidacy before taking any education courses numbered 2000 and above.

Generally, candidates apply for admission to Teacher Candidacy during the second semester of your first year. Athens campus candidates must attend a group meeting arranged by Patton College Office of Student Affairs. Regional campus students should check with Student Services or the dean’s office on the regional campus for information.

Requirements

The following requirements must be met during the first 30 hours of enrollment. These requirements are subject to change.

1. Completion of 30 semester hours of credit with an overall GPA of 3.00. No education courses may be included in the GPA.
2. Completion of the following courses with a grade of C or better in each course:
   1. Tier I Math course (1M) with a grade of C (2.0) or higher
   2. Tier I Freshman Composition course (1E) with a grade of C (2.0) or higher
   3. EDTE 1000  - Introduction to Teacher Education with a grade of C (2.0) or higher
   4. PSY 1010  - General Psychology with a grade of C (2.0) or higher
3. Satisfactory performance on the PRAXIS CORE (Academic Skills for Educators) Test. You must achieve scores of 156 or above in reading, 150 or above in mathematics, and 162 or above in writing OR be exempt from the test because of a standardized test score. You must have achieved a composite score of 21 or better on the ACT and/or 990 or better on the SAT to be exempt. You may not enroll in education courses until this requirement is met.
4. Submission of the results of a background check through BCI & FBI.
5. Submission of results of the tuberculosis skin test (administered by Campus Care or other appropriate office).
6. Screening and recommendation by a representative appointed by faculty.
7. GPA may be considered in admission decisions for transfer students.

Admission to Advanced Standing

Candidates must be admitted to Advanced Standing before taking any education courses numbered 3000 or above. Candidates must maintain an overall GPA of 2.75, as well as a 2.75 GPA in each teaching field for which licensure is sought to continue to take education courses numbered 3000 or above. Methods courses can be taken no more than twice. Failure to obtain a satisfactory grade can result in dismissal from the program.

Athens campus students must attend a group meeting arranged by Patton College Office of Student Affairs, and regional campus students should check with Student Services or the dean’s office on the regional campus for information.

   1. Completion of 60 semester hours of credit with an overall GPA of 2.75.
   2. An accumulative GPA of 2.75 in each teaching field for which a licensure is sought.
   3. Satisfactory reports from:
      1. The Office of Community Standards
      2. Faculty
2. Specific requirements for Moderate to Intensive Educational Needs
   1. Candidates will not be admitted to Advanced Standing until all required courses are completed with a grade of C (2.0) or higher.
   2. Completion of the following courses with a minimum grade of C in each:
      1. EDTE 2000 
      2. EDTE 2010 
      3. EDTE 2020 
   3. A 2.75 GPA in each teaching field for which licensure is being sought.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Upon successful completion of this program and passing scores on the state licensing exams, individuals are eligible to hold K-12 public school teaching positions as an intervention specialist. Further, many individuals are qualified to work in agencies serving families, young children and those who provide services to adults with disabilities.
