Program Overview
The computer technology program is a course of study that leads to an Associate Degree in Applied Business. Students develop skills in several areas of computer technology including hardware, computer networking, computer programming, databases, network security, and website development. In addition, students develop skills that enable them to work effectively in business and society including oral and written communication, logic, trouble-shooting, ethical behavior, and time management. As full participants in the academic mission of the University, students take courses in a variety of disciplines in preparation for entering the work force or continuing with their education.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the computer technology major, students will be able to:
- Be exposed to a breath of computer technologies and programs including networking, programming, database management, and web site development.
- Develop effective computer technology skills, including the ability to learn new technologies, troubleshoot problems, create system requirements, evaluate systems, and document requirements and solutions.
- Develop effective communication skills, both written and verbal
- Develop an understanding of the role of the computer professional within an organization, including the basics of business accounting and economics, the ethical use of information and computer systems, and the professional understanding of an organization’s goals, culture, and business.
- Develop respect for diversity and community
- Develop the ability to create, manage, and follow a plan that meets an identified goal.
- Obtain the skills necessary for future academic growth.

Opportunities Upon Graduation
Students who earn a degree in computer technology work in a variety of positions in computer-based professions such as programming, computer networking, website design and management, and database support. Depending on the chosen electives in the major, graduates are prepared to work as network technicians, computer support technicians, help desk support analysts, entry level programmers, and website developers. Graduates may choose to pursue a bachelors degree in technical and applied studies, communication studies, or specialized studies.
Requirements
Technical Associate Degree Requirements
The minimum requirement for the Associate in Applied Business (A.A.B.) or the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree is the completion of 60 credits with a 2.0 accumulative GPA in both the major area of study and all course work attempted at Ohio University. A maximum of 15 credits earned through prior learning assessment may be applied to any technical associate degree. You must earn a minimum of 18 semester credit hours while enrolled at Ohio University, and you must earn a minimum of 50 percent of coursework taken to fulfill your major concentration in residence with resident credit as defined in the Graduation Requirements – Universitywide section. You also must meet Ohio University BRICKS requirements for associate degrees. (See Graduation Requirements - Universitywide section)
To earn a technical associate degree, you must complete an Application for Update of Program(s), available from any college office or regional campus student services office.
