OHIO UNIVERSITY INVITES APPLICATIONS

FOR THE PHD IN COUNSELOR EDUCATION & SUPERVISION PROGRAM

FOR THE 2015-2016 ACADEMIC YEAR

We invite applications to one of the oldest and most prestigious programs in Counselor Education & Supervision in the country. The Counselor Education Program at Ohio University (OU) was established in 1948 by George E. Hill, a national leader in Counselor Education. The first PhD degree from the program was granted in 1962. Chi Sigma Iota (CSI), the National Counseling Academic & Professional Honor Society International was founded at OU in 1985 with the Alpha Chapter.

Our alumni are in Counselor Education and leadership positions all over the world. We have a strong and diverse faculty with an excellent record of scholarship and professional service. The PhD program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation for Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), and we nurture a strong professional counseling identity.

Doctoral study in Counselor Education & Supervision at Ohio University is designed to prepare individuals to be counselor education professionals in colleges and universities. The doctoral program also provides advanced level preparation for counselors to work in leadership positions in public and private human services, mental health, rehabilitation, and educational settings. We are interested in recruiting a diverse student body. Students who self-identify as minorities or students with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

PhD applicants typically already possess a Master’s degree in Counseling or a closely related field. They wish to improve their scholarly, instructional, clinical, and research skills through advanced training and professional development. The doctoral program is based on the philosophy that each student enters with unique strengths and abilities and individual professional career goals; therefore, beyond the required courses, each student is expected to build a program based upon prior academic preparation, previous work experience, and future career expectations.

All eligible full-time PhD students are awarded a Graduate Assistantship (GA) for a minimum of two years. The GA positions come with a full tuition waiver and a competitive stipend. GAs are required to work 20 hours per week during fall and spring semesters. Work is not required during summer. For priority consideration for Fall 2015, please apply by January 15, 2015.
If you are attending the AOCC this year, please visit us at the Doctoral Showcase at AOCC on Thursday, November 6, 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm during the Networking Reception. The Doctoral Showcase will be just outside the Easton ballroom, across from booths 27 to 34. Counselor Education faculty and/or students will be available to speak with anyone interested in doctoral studies at Ohio University. We would also like to invite prospective Ph.D. students to the Ohio University reception on Thursday, November 6, 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm in Juniper A.

All prospective applicants are encouraged to contact the program coordinator for further information and/or to set up a visit.
