It appears that the shooting in El Paso was motivated by domestic terrorism. In Dayton, we are not yet sure of all the details. Although NAMI Ohio understands the concerns about mental illness held by the general public, we are very concerned that mental illness will be blamed for these senseless acts of violence. We are devastated, as family members and as those living with mental illness, that we are automatically associated with the individuals who commit these acts. That is not fair and it is misguided. It is untreated mental illness that is the real problem. It is true that there is a small percentage of people diagnosed with mental illness that do not receive appropriate treatment, and sometimes their untreated mental illness plays a role in these violent crimes. We want to emphasize that those individuals living with mental illness who receive and comply with treatment are no more of a risk for violent behavior than the rest of the general population. The most important thing that we learn from these tragedies, is that we must recognize the need for a change in the mental health system. It is not enough to simply identify someone with a mental illness. We must follow up with immediate and long-term care. We believe that those committing these senseless acts that have an untreated mental illness may have exhibited symptoms prior to their crimes. We must educate everyone in society to recognize these symptoms but more importantly be capable of referring to immediate treatment. Again, we emphasize the vast majority of those living with mental illness and receiving care are no more likely to commit violent acts than members of the general population. Mental illness is no different than any other health condition and when it goes untreated there are consequences, sometimes those consequences are dire. We ask everyone reading this message to demand that crisis treatment is available, as well as long-term care including residential and supportive housing. NAMI Ohio and the citizens of this state that we represent are heartbroken by these tragedies. We pray for the families that lost loved ones and hope that we never have to write a message like this again.
