As part of Geography Week and Zero Waste Week, the OHIO Department of Geography and the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs are pleased to present the 3rd annual OHIO GIS Day Celebration with speakers, posters and pizza! Come learn how GIS applies to research and real-world, regional projects! Free and open to the public. Pizza will be provided; please bring your own water bottle to this Earth Day, Every Day Green Event as part of Zero Waste Awareness Week.Both sessions will take place in Clippinger Hall, Room 119. 10:45-11:40 am: GIS Day Panel 1 * Suzie Prange, Ph.D., Furbearer Specialist & Research Biologist, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife: "GIS is Wildlife Conservation: The Return of the Bobcat to Ohio". Suzie currently works for the Ohio Division of Wildlife, serving as the state's furbearer biologist. The majority of her research is dedicated to threatened and endangered forest wildlife species. Suzie received a B.S. and M.S. in biology from the University of South Alabama and a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. * Garrett P. Sisson, Master's Candidate, OHIO: "The Rocks Are Hotter on the Other Side of the Fence: Timber Rattlesnakes (Crotalus horridus) in a Road-Fragmented Landscape". Garrett is a conservation biologist broadly interested in how anthropogenic stressors affect wildlife populations, especially reptiles and amphibians. He is currently pursuing a M.S. in biology at OHIO under the advisement of Drs. Willem Roosenburg and Shawn Kuchta. His research has focused on assessing the impacts of a newly-constructed highway on a population of endangered timber rattlesnakes. 11:50-12:45 pm: GIS Day Panel 2 * Michael Lachman, Coordinator, Athens Public Transit: "Feet, Wheels, Doors and Tailpipes: Using GIS to Study our Daily Travel Patterns" Michael is a lifelong resident of Athens County and currently works as the coordinator for Athens Public Transit. He is a candidate for an M.S. in Environmental Studies at OHIO with a focus on transportation accessibility. Michael has served on the steering committee for the Ohio Statewide Transit Needs Study, and is a contributor to the National Rural Transit Assistance Program. * Steven Porter, Geospatial Software Development Engineer: "The Layers of GIS: Tasks, Tools and Products" Steven is a member of the GIS Team at the OHIO Voinovich School. He performs both spatial and non-spatial data analysis, creates visualizations, and develops software tools with a preference for open source technology. Previously, Steven was employed in the fields of IT and aviation. He holds a B.S. in physics-meteorology and a M.S. in geography from OHIO.
