Hello Everyone,

If you haven't already seen this email, please check out information regarding the upcoming Student Expo below! The expo will continue, but in an online "virtual format". This does NOT mean you will have to post a PDF of your poster online, but rather a photo/video/GIF/etc with a short description of your research project on social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram! Easy right! If you don't have a Twitter or Instagram account and you forward what you would like posted, we can use the OCEES account to do it for you, as we'll already be retweeting much of your awesome research! Additionally, you don't have to be pre-registered for the Expo to participate! Everyone is encouraged to join!

This will give you the opportunity to still present a snippet of your research to a broad, virtual audience with very little effort involved! Please see the email below and respond back to Roxanne if you would like to present (as well as the additional questions). We've put so much work into our research already, we might as well share it and showcase the awesome research the OCEES graduate and undergraduate students are doing!

Please share and encourage students in your labs to participate!! The "Virtual Expo" will be live on April 9.

Cheers,
Cassie

Subject: Virtual Student Expo

Dear Expo presenters,

Please share with your co-presenters

We have been thinking about ways to honor the work you have done to prepare for the Student Expo and to celebrate and showcase Ohio University student research & creative activity.

We are now planning a Virtual Expo, where for one day (April 9) students will post about their projects to social media. Consistent with social media, these posts will be limited in text length, should engage general audiences and should have accompanying images, GIF or short video clips. But we fully encourage everyone to think creatively about how they will craft these posts!

We (@bobcatsdiscover, @ohiou, and various other university entities) will then share (retweet/re-gram) your posts to our extended community. We will not be able to make our usual cash awards for judging, but we are planning on providing t-shirts to all students who participate and having small awards, TweetTreats, criteria to be shared later. These will be mailed to people after the event.

In a period of such profound uncertainty we think that coming together as a community of researchers, artists and scholars will be incredibly exciting. But, we want to know what you think.

To help us plan the event, we would greatly appreciate it if everyone filled out this short 6-question survey asap: https://ohio.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_b8B4UuBoeCno2mp
FYI, here are the questions:

  * Are you an UG or graduate student?
  * Do you have a Twitter account?
  * If not, would you be willing to create a Twitter account to participate in the Virtual Expo?
  * Do you have an Instagram account?
  * If not, would you be willing to create an Instagram account to participate in the Virtual Expo?
  * Do you think you and/or your co-presenters would be willing to participate in the Virtual Expo by posting about your research/art on April 9? (Note, posts can be as simple as an image and text or GIFs and videos. We encourage you to think of ways to actively engage people! )

Once we hear back from you, we’ll be in touch with more details, hashtags, etc.

Thank you,

Roxanne

IMPORTANT: #OUVirtualExpo is different than our traditional live Student Expo. Here are some comparisons.

Traditional Live Student Expo

#OUVirtualExpo

Format

Students present their research & creative works via posters, exhibits and performances at the Convo

  * Students post about their research & creative works to their Twitter and/or Instagram and tag @bobcatsdiscover & others (e.g., your advisor's account) and include #OUVirtualExpo in post.
  *   Expo staff retweet/regram to @bobcatsdiscover
  * Other tagged accounts retweet/regram to their accounts
  * Followers for all accounts retweet/regram and comment from their accounts

Students present to judges from 9-11 am and the greater community from 11-2:30 pm on April 9.

Student can post at any time during April 9 at their convenience.

Judging

Students make 10-min presentations to compete for cash awards in discipline-specific session

Students post to social media to compete for small prizes, TweetTreats

There may be additional small cash prizes (TBD)

T-shirts

Students who participate pick up t-shirts before the event.

Students who post about their research/creative works and use the #OUVirtualExpo hashtag get t-shirts mailed to them after the event

Presentations

Some students prepare posters

No paper posters please. We recommend social-media appropriate posts with an image or two, GIF, or short video (30 sec-1 min).

Some students prepare video

Videos are great, but keep them to <1 min

Some students prepare power point presentations

Consider making a GIF slide deck with a few images or a short thread of multiple threaded posts.

Attendees

Students must register to present

No registration required!

Audience

Typically we have 2000 attendees

The sky is the limit! @bobcatsdiscover often has 1000s of people viewing our posts.

Faculty/Staff Participation

  * Mentors work with students to prepare presentations.
  * Faculty/staff judge presentations & casually view presentations at Expo

  * Mentors can work with students to prepare posts.
  * Faculty/staff are encouraged to comment on and retweet/regram posts online

Finding Presentations

Insert key words, presenter name, department into Student Expo app and find location

Search posts for #OUVirtualExpo and join us @bobcatsdiscover

In addition to the extensive lists of social media hashtags already out there, we are creating a list of hashtags and handles (@name) for departments/colleges/campuses that presenters can include in their post.
