Hi Folks: This week the Department of Environmental and Plant Biology will host Laura Kubatko ( https://www.asc.ohio-state.edu/kubatko.2// ) from Ohio State University. Laura's work has largely focused on statistical genetics/genomics, phylogenetics, and population genetics. She will deliver a talk on Friday, March 24th, from 11:50–12:45 in 104 Porter Hall, all are invited! Please see the abstract of her talk below. Following the colloquium, Laura will be presenting a brief workshop on the software she developed called HyDe, which is able to infer hybridization from genomic data. This is a great opportunity to learn how to use a new bioinformatics approach from the person who developed it! Please join us in 429 Porter Hall from 2–3 for the workshop, all are invited! You might want to download the program onto your laptop prior to the workshop: https://www.asc.ohio-state.edu/kubatko.2/software/HyDe/ I hope you can all make it to the colloquium and workshop. ~John Schenk Colloquium abstract: Species-level phylogenetic trees represent the sequence of evolutionary events that have given rise to the species observed at the present time. Species trees may differ from gene trees — trees that represent the evolutionary history for individual genes throughout the genome — due to evolutionary processes such as hybridization, horizontal gene transfer, and ancestral polymorphism. In this talk, I will first describe models for the relationship between gene trees and species trees, focusing specifically on the case of ancestral polymorphism. I’ll then consider phylogenetically-based methods for studying biodiversity, and demonstrate the important distinction between genes trees and species trees. The impact of using gene trees vs. species trees will be examined with empirical data from several taxonomic groups, ranging from yeast to mammals. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
