Hi all,

We are starting up our Bird Building Collision Monitoring for spring migration. As you come back from spring break, we encourage you to sign up to monitor a building near you – a great way to get a few extra steps in and contribute to community science! We also encourage you to make changes in your own homes to prevent window strikes. More information is below! Please feel free to forward the email to anyone you think might be interested.

·         Did you know that approximately 1 BILLION birds die each year from collisions with windows and buildings?

·         Birds collide with glass because they see the world differently than people do.

·         Bird building collisions are a leading cause of mortality in birds, and we can do something about this conservation issue!

·         There are many tools to prevent bird building collisions and associated mortality.

·         Determining what buildings and glass surfaces contribute to bird collisions is a first step in reducing mortality.

·         Our lab is monitoring several buildings on OU’s Athens Campus including Porter, Grover, Walter Field House, Walter Hall, Ping, Tanaka, Carr, Sowle, Luchs, Clippinger, New Chemistry Building, Alden, Irvine, Schoonover, Heritage

·         While we hope we don't find dead birds, any birds we recover are frozen then made into museum specimens by Ohio University students. These specimens contribute to teaching, research and learning at OHIO.

·         The bags have information on how to record your data.

·         If you find a dead bird, please drop it off in the bag that day so we can preserve the specimen. It is important to get the bird into the freezer as quickly as possible. We check the box every afternoon! Please make sure you wash your hands after handling any dead bird.
