East Galleries
Guest Curated by Andrea Frohne, Ph.D.
For the first time, artists are exhibited together from several countries in the Horn of Africa, comprised of Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, Djibouti, and Somalia along the Red Sea. Living today in North America and Europe, the artists refigure indigenous artistic content, thereby visually articulating multidirectional, transnational flows, frictions, networks, and mobilities within and between the continents of Africa, North America, and other world spaces. The artworks become a means for understanding transnational complexities of diasporas, political unrest in the Horn, and broader experiences of migration.
Artists in this exhibition are:
Dawit L. Petros (Eritrea/Canada/NYC) Elsa Gebreyesus (Eritrea/Canada/Washington DC)
Salem Mekuria (Ethiopia/Boston) Yegizaw Michael (Eritrea/Seattle)
Wosene Worke Kosrof (Ethiopia/Berkeley, CA) Mohamed Hamid (Sudan/Columbus, OH)
Rashid Ali (Somalia/London) & Andrew Cross (England) Julie Mehretu (Ethiopia/NYC)
