    Our Mathematics graduate programs are home to students seeking knowledge of advanced mathematics — knowledge for application to other areas or knowledge for its own sake. So many questions remain to be solved in number theory, theoretical computer science, and more.

    At the graduate math level we offer an M.S. degree with tracks in Applied, Pure, and Computational Mathematics and a Ph.D. degree with Pure and Applied tracks.

    Students at the master's level acquire a solid understanding of mathematics and the ability to apply it effectively. Doctoral students acquire the experience necessary to do original research in mathematics, as well as the versatility to connect mathematics with other fields.

    Advice on How to Succeed in Graduate Math Programs

    What are some of the key things you need to know about applying to and thriving in graduate math programs at OHIO? Here's a few snippets, but be sure to read the entire list of Advice on How to Succeed in Graduate Math Programs .

    • There is no separate application for financial support. On the main application for admission, simply check the boxes indicating that you are seeking support. If you have teaching experience or other information that we should take into account, you can include them in your statement of purpose.
    • If you do not intend to continue to a Ph.D. in Mathematics, start your master's program with the applied Master of Science Applied Track or Computational Track.
    • If you intend to continue to a Ph.D. in Mathematics, follow the Master of Science Doctoral Preparation Track to both fulfill the requirements for the M.S. and be prepared for comprehensive examinations in the doctoral program here or at other universities.
    • For mathematics doctoral students: Your goal is to pass the comprehensive examinations as soon as possible so that you can focus on research. In your first year, you should take whatever 6000-level classes you still need so that you can pass the exams after your first year.

    Financial Aid for Graduate Mathematics Students

    The Mathematics Department awards financial support in the form of Teaching Assistantships and Graduate Recruitment Scholarships. Such support is awarded on a competitive basis. Both master's and doctoral students are eligible.

    Financial Support for Math Grad Students

    Teaching Assistants (TAs) run the recitations for undergraduate students. This can include working through homework problems with the students and supervising group work and quizzes. TAs also might hold office hours and assist in grading.

    The Office of Nationally Competitive Awards (ONCA) and the Director of Grant Development work together to help promising undergraduate and graduate students compete for national awards, which can provide the funding, opportunity, and connections to realize their dreams — both now and in the future.

    Graduate math students gain familiarity with advanced topics by attending and reporting on seminars and colloquia presented by the Mathematics Department. The talks also can be math-related seminars presented by departments such as engineering, physics, biology, or economics.

    American Mathematical Society Graduate Chapter

    Any student engaged or interested in mathematics and its applications shall be eligible for membership in this Chapter. Although the program is designed with graduate students in mind, schools without graduate programs but who meet eligibility requirements may participate.
