Master's in Adolescent-to-Young Adult Education and Multi-Age with Licensure

The Master’s Program with Licensure in Adolescent-to-Young-Adult (AYA) and Multi-Age Education is a one-year (3 academic terms), in-person program that leads to an Ohio teaching license in a selected content area:

  • Grades 7-12: Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, or Science (multiple science options)
  • Art Education (grades K-12)
  • Theater Education (grades preK-12)

Features

  • One-year program: summer → fall → spring
  • Designed for new teachers (not for teachers adding another licensure area)
  • Full-time commitment (cannot be completed while also working or teaching full-time)
  • Focus on educational practice (does not include coursework in the content area)
  • Extensive field experiences in area classrooms
  • Primarily in person on the Athens campus and in area schools
  • Only open to U.S. citizens or permanent residents (an I-20 may not be issued for this program)
  • Must have transportation for field experiences in area schools

Yearlong Teaching Internship / Field Placement

All teacher candidates must complete a yearlong internship in a classroom which includes a Fall seminar (EDPL 6920) and Spring seminar (EDPL 5650). In the Fall term candidates observe and teach in a classroom for a minimum of 2 full days per week and participate in the Rural Urban Collaborative, a non-consecutive four day placement in an urban school setting. During the Spring term candidates observe and teach in a classroom full-time and complete the  edTPA assessment .

All placements will be made by the OHIO Center for Clinical Practice in Education and may under no circumstances be initiated by the teacher candidate.

Admissions Process and Requirements

Prerequisite Coursework

You must have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher in an area  closely related to your chosen content area (Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Art, or Theater). If you do not have adequate prior coursework we will provide a list of additional required courses prior to applying.

Before Applying

Applications are due 4/15, so you must begin well in advance of that date. Prior to initiating your application, complete our  online interest form . As indicated in the form, if possible, upload an unofficial copy of any relevant transcripts.

You also must pass the Ohio Assessment for Educators (OAE) licensure test for your content area:

Admissions Requirements

Applications require:

  • Undergraduate transcripts
  • Passing OAE test results:official results preferred, but a scan of your unofficial results may be uploaded if needed
  • Personal statement:1-2 page statement on why you want to be a teacher in the subject area you've chosen 
  • Resume/CV:a 1-2 page document is generally appropriate
  • Writing sample:a paper from a recent class or some form of professional writing
  • Three letters of recommendation:these are typically from past professors/instructors, especially in your academic area, but work references, especially if you have worked with children, are also appropriate

Capstone Project (Master's Research Project)

Capstone Project (Master's Research Project)

The capstone project consists of a portfolio, a research study, or a master's thesis. Students must consult with their faculty advisor to determine the capstone project that is most appropriate for their goals. You must complete your capstone project to graduate from the program and obtain your teaching license. You will begin conceptualizing your project in the Fall term in EDTE 6670 and complete the project in the spring and/or summer terms in EDTE 6940. Please be aware that your advisor may not be available to work with you in the summer term and you should discuss your timeline with your advisor before the end of the fall term.

Licensure

Licensure

The Patton College of Education will recommend you for licensure after (i) successfully completing all required coursework, and (ii) eitherscoring 37 or higher on the  edTPA assessment or passing the appropriate OAE Assessment of Pedagogical Knowledge:
