Overview 

Partnering with Garden City University College (GCUC) in Ghana, this program provides students with an interdisciplinary clinical and public health opportunity. Participants will have the opportunity to be paired with a GCUC student or other health professionals appropriate to their interests and engage in clinical experiences and participate in public health research activities while exploring the country’s culture and history through a variety of excursions. 

This program will encourage global exploration of health-related professions through both clinical and research-based activities. The research component of this program will provide students with exposure to training in research ethics, study design, data analysis, and the dissemination of findings, using publicly available data from Ghana. Upon completion of the training, students will have successfully conducted and finalized research project.

  • Yellow Fever vaccination is required for entry into Ghana. 

Program Dates 

Summer 2025: May 25 - June 14, 2025

*Participants will need to plan to depart the US on May 24 to arrive in Ghana on May 25, and depart Ghana on June 14 with an anticipated arrival in the US on June 15.

Academics

This program recruits students from a wide variety of academic levels, and the course offerings available will depend on a student's class rank at the time of travel:

  • IHS 4303: Secondary Data Analysis in Global Health and Development (4 OHIO Undergraduate credits)
  • IHS 5303: Secondary Data Analysis in Global Health and Development (4 OHIO Graduate credits)
  • OCOM 8911: Global Health Rotation (HCOM Years 3 & 4) 

A non-credit option is also available for HCOM Years 1 & 2. 

Cost

Items that are not related to the program (ie. additional entertainment, souvenirs, extra travel, contingency funds) are not included in the cost estimates provided and should be budgeted for separately.  

*Note: 

  • Non-resident surcharge waived for the credit hours associated with this program. 
  • If you are nominated to this program, you will be required to pay a deposit to confirm your participation. The deposit is a down payment on the total costs to be billed by OHIO and is determined by the total cost of the program.

Eligibility & Application Requirements 

Applicants are required to submit:

  • A personal statement indicating their interest/goals for this particular program
  • 2 Professional References who will complete a form.
  • DARS (required only for undergraduates)

Students who will be on probation at any point during the program for a conduct offense that took place less than a calendar year from the program start date may not study abroad.  Read the entire conduct policy

Participants  must have a at least a high school diploma or the equivalent (e.g. GED) by the start date of the program to be considered for eligibility.  Students enrolled in College Credit Plus (CC+) are not eligible for study away programs.

Entry and Exit Requirements 

U.S. citizens are required to have a valid U.S. passport when traveling outside of the United States. If you plan to study or travel abroad in the next year,   apply for your passport    now. Some countries also require a visa to legally enter or reside in the country.

Proof of Yellow Fever vaccination is required for entry into Ghana.
