Wilkinson, Milo

Biographical note

Milo Wilkinson was born around 1839 in Belmont County, Ohio. He appears in the 1860 Census as a twenty-one year old clerk living in the house of his parents William Wilkinson, Jr. and Mary Ann with nine other children. The farm was in Smith Township served by the Centerville Post Office. His grandfather was probably William Wilkinson, a hotel keeper in St. Clairsville, Belmont County, Ohio. Milo mustered into Union Army military service for the American Civil War on December 16, 1861 at Camp Andrews, Mt. Vernon, Ohio. He was eventually assigned to Company D of the 43rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He entered the service as a private. He was appointed sergeant on June 17, 1862 and 1st sergeant some time later. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in Company D on May 9, 1864. He traveled around Ohio as a Union Army recruiter. Milo participated in a Georgia battle where he received a gunshot wound on May 29, 1864. He died of disease on June 29, 1864 at a military hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee and was buried there.
