Biographical note
Henry Stafford Neal was an attorney and Republican Congressman from Ohio. He was admitted to the bar in approximately 1851 and commenced practice in Ironton, Ohio. Neal was elected to the 45th, 46th and 47th Congresses. He served from 1877 to 1883, and as chairman of the COmmittee on District of Columbia during the 47th Congress. Neal was not a candidate for renomination in 1882. He resumed the practice of his profession at Ironton, Ohio.

Henry Safford Neal letters contains two handwritten letters. The first is dated December 13, 1882 and is on House of Representatives letterhead. It is addressed to Ben Perley Poore of the Senate Committee for Public Printing. It appears to be a brief personal note regarding his family. The second letter is dated May 29, 1886 and is addressed to Ben W. Austin of Sioux City, Iowa.
