Record of injured coal miners, 1912 - 1918

 File — Box: 2, Folder: 14

Scope and Content

From the Collection:

The collection contains 22 birth record books, dating from 1918-1936. There is some indication that these records are of births in the Glouster area of Athens County.

One of the earliest ledgers in the collection is from the period 1885-1887. It is a notebook used by Crawford when he attended medical school. A schedule in the front of the book plus the contents of the book itself show that he took classes in dermatology, general pathology, and the study of diseases.

Other books in the collection (a total of 3) are those used by Crawford during the time he practiced with Dr. H.C. Allen (1894-1904). Crawford supposedly started with Allen before going to medical school, but the evidence would appear to indicate that he attended school prior to practice with Dr. Allen.

Still other ledgers are those Crawford employed when serving the mines and miners; the dates represented span the years 1891-1927.

The ledger dated 1906-1909 is one used when he worked in partnership with a Dr. Koons. Nothing more is known of Dr. Koons.

The remainder of the collection consists of numerous miscellaneous items such as personal thank-you letters addressed to Crawford, and loose papers from ledgers. The proper origin of these loose papers is not known.
