Scope and Content
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1179 records span from 1954 to 1960 and are comprised of bylaws, a guide for handling grievances, correspondence, and minutes of general meetings.
The correspondence file contains the affiliation of the Local chapter of IBEW 1179 with the local and state chapters of the AFL-CIO and CLC in 1967, in accordance with the request of the International Vice-President of IBEW, the salary adjustments in the bylaws, and insurance claims for deceased members.
The Minutes of the General Meetings are complete from February 11, 1954 to March 18, 1960. They are a record of general business. There is also an oversize collection containing items dealing with the Norfolk and Western Railway Company.

History of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1179
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Local 1179 is based in Portsmouth, Ohio. The Bylaws of System Council No. 25 govern IBEW 1179, of which it is a part, having jurisdiction over all electrical work on the Norfolk and Western Railway and the Ann Arbor Railway. As of 1979, the national IBEW restructured the unions, and Local 1179 is now part of Local 575 in District 4.

Acquisition Information
The Ohio University Archives received the collection as a donation from Bob Turner, Recording Secretary for IBEW Local 1179, in March 1980. It was acquired as part of the Ohio Labor History Project.

Ohio University will entertain requests to photocopy reasonable amounts of material from the collection for the convenience of individual researchers.
