Papers of Dr. Lowell Eugene Gallaway
Scope and Content
The Papers of Dr. Lowell Eugene Gallaway contain documents and other materials related to the personal and professional life and times of Dr. Lowell Gallaway; Ohio native, distinguished professor of Economics at Ohio University, and economic advisor for the United States government. Titled by Dr. Gallaway as "First Prize in the Lottery of Life," the Gallaway papers are contained in several volumes, which the donor had hardbound in book format before donating the collection to the Ohio University Archives. Prior to their delivery to the archives, the books were helpfully organized and ordered by Dr. Gallaway in a system beginning with Roman numerals. In these papers, Dr. Gallaway's personal and professional life are chronicled--from his birth in 1930 to the time of the donation of the final volume of papers to the Ohio University Archives in 2015--often in great detail. Interesting aspects and milestones of Dr. Gallaway's family life and history, as well as his academic and professional life and accomplishments are included along the way. Dr. Gallaway's thoughts and opinions on government economic policies such as welfare, poverty policies, and taxation are also part of this collection. Artistic works, including paintings, sketches, poems, photographs, and children's books give the interested researcher insight into some of Dr. Gallaway's other talents and interests. The larger part of the collection includes all of Dr. Gallaway's published and unpublished professional writings, including a series of essays that critiques American liberalism, and Dr. Gallaway's publications related to economic policies in the United States during the Reagan and Bush, Sr. administrations. Thus, the Gallaway Collection offers a detailed account of the intellectual development and ideas of an important conservative economist, as well as insights into the life of an American male during the last two-thirds of the 20th Century.
