Margery Young Martin papers
Scope and Content
The Margery Young Martin (MYM) papers contains documents created and collected by MYM during her time as a student at Ohio University (OU). The papers span from 1915 to 1923. The collection contains Evolution of Expression, Volumes 1 and 2, by Charles Wesley Emerson labeled with MYM's name and sorority symbols. There are no additional markings, but Volume 1 has a handful of public speaking-related pages tucked inside the front cover. A photograph, depicting a young woman with luggage, labeled "Helma," is at the back of Volume 1. Also included are some loose papers. There is a handwritten script for a skit, "The Hat Stunt"; a list, "How to Study Speech," by J.S. Gaylord; and a program from the 1921 OU Commencement at which both MYM and her later husband Granville Martin received their diplomas. Other items consist of an Alumni Association keychain and MYM's personal diary from 1918 to1923. It is of the "Line a Day" style, which means that each page is a date, and that each entry on that page is a separate year. This diary records MYM's thoughts, social engagements, and reactions to important events in the world around her such as the final months of World War I. The collection is accompanied by a letter from MYM's daughter Mary Hayes to the Office of Alumni Relations offering the materials to the Archives. During accessioning, a number of pages from the 1921 Athena yearbook were photocopied and placed with the collection. These can be found with the description and inventory. They are in generally good condition, though additional care should be taken with all materials of this age. During accessioning, Archives staff made no substantial changes to the makeup of this collection. The Young-Martin Collection was, however, removed from its original box and placed in archival containers.
