Scope and Content
The International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades, Local 555 records span from 1907 to 1970 and document the activities of this labor union local. The collection includes meeting minutes, which record the business and finances of the Local, and contain discussions of grievances over unfair practices and discussions of agreements entered into between the Local and businesses or other Locals. There is a small sampling of reports from the Business Representative. He acts for the Local by investigating grievances involving the business community and their hiring or work practices.
Most of the correspondence is small samples of a wide number of years, 1934, 1936, 1937, 1939-1941, 1951-1953, 1967. It is mainly requests for clarification of union proceedings or regulations as they concern Local business and charges against members. The Sutler Case, 1939, is a series of inquires to various officials concerning possible action against the Sutler Brothers. They were charged with unfair labor practices for working without union help.
The second box is almost all printed material containing agreements, bylaws, Minutes of the 54th Annual Convention, and more.
The Dues Book and the Day Book list payment of monthly dues by Local members and record expenses, 1907-1914, 1929-1937, 1940-1945, 1953-1957.

The International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades is a labor union that represents workers in finishing trades including painters, drywall finishers, wallcoverers, glaziers, glass workers, floor covering installers, sign makers, display workers, convention and show decorators. The Local 555 is based in Portsmouth, Ohio.

Acquisition Information
The Ohio University Archives received the collection from Tilden G. Campbell, President of Local 555 in May 1978. It was acquired as part of the Ohio Labor History Project.
