The American Railroad Companies Stocks, Bonds & Notes represent companies primarily from the state of Ohio or surrounding areas. Also included in this collection are two municipal bond certificates from the city of Philadelphia. The collection was created by Kenneth W. Rendell Inc., a Massachusetts dealer in manuscripts and documents, and given to Ohio University.

History of the railroads
Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railroad: the Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton Railroad was considered a part of the Big Four Railroad and was connected to the Belt Line. This railroad was later renamed the Baltimore and Ohio.
Cincinnati, Indianapolis, St. Louis and Chicago Railway Company: the Cincinnati, Indianapolis, St. Louis and Chicago Railway Company was part of the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway Company by consolidation.
Cincinnati, Sandusky and Cleveland Railroad Company: the Cincinnati, Sandusky and Cleveland Railroad Company has been running for over 100 years and is now controlled by the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway Company.
Cleveland, Painesville and Ashtabula Railroad Company: the Cleveland, Painesville and Ashtabula Railroad Company was formed in 1851 and was later consolidated with the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway Company.
Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway Company: This company was born of a consolidation between the Cleveland Columbus Cincinnati, and Indianapolis Railway Co., the Cincinnati Indianapolis St. Louis and Chicago Railway Co., and the Indianapolis and St. Louis Railway Co. The consolidation occurred on June 30, 1889. The company also went on to control or merge with several other railway companies.
Columbus, Springfield, and Cincinnati Railroad Company: With its roots in 1869, this company survived on its own for a short while until leased by the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway Company. The lease was effective for ninety-nine years, but the Columbus, Springfield, and Cincinnati Railroad Company merged with its leaser in January, 1913. $997,850.00 of the companies $1,000,000.00 stock was owned by the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway Company.
Detroit, Monroe and Toledo Railroad Company: Built a portion of a longer railroad from Detroit to Chicago which was completed in January, 1857. The portion this company built is the extension of track between Detroit and Toledo. The company became incorporated in 1855 and was leased a year later to the Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana Railroad Company.
Kanawha & Michigan Railroad Company: Much of this company's history comes from consolidations. Two separate Kanawha/Ohio railroad companies consolidated in 1886. After buying its property in foreclosures, the purchasers reorganized the company and named it the Kanawha & Michigan Railroad Company.
Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad Company: This company was incorporated November 13, 1880 and is an extension of the Fayette Branch of the Detroit and Chicago Railroad, and is controlled by the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroad Company.
Lake Shore Railway Company: "A consolidation under agreement of February 11, 1869 (certificate filed with Secretary of State of Ohio on April 6, 1869), of The Cleveland and Toledo Railroad Company and The Lake Shore Railway Company…The Cleveland, Painesville and Ashtabula Railroad Company was incorporated February 18, 1848… Name of The Cleveland, Painesville and Ashtabula Railroad Company changed to The Lake Shore Railway Company March 31, 1868."
Michigan Central Railroad Company: The Michigan Central Railroad Company, under an agreement on December 12, 1882, had control of the line of road that extends from Springwells, Mich., to Toledo, Ohio, and was operated by the M.C.R.C. and the Canada Southern Railway Company, for joint operation during a term of twenty-one years. "The Canada Southern Railway Company is the owner of substantially all the stock and bonds of this company, and the property is operated as a division of that system."

Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana Railroad Company: "Formed by the consolidation of The Michigan Southern Railroad Company and The Northern Indiana Railroad Company April 25, 1855. The Michigan Southern Railroad Company was chartered by the State of Michigan May 9, 1846. It succeeded to rights of, the Southern Railroad Company, a road commenced by the State of Michigan about 1838."
New York and Fort Lee Railroad Company: Chartered on March 14, 1861, and incorporated March 16, 1857. The name was changed to its present title on March 8, 1862. The road was opened for traffic in 1870. The entire capital stock of the New York and Fort Lee Railroad Company was acquired by The New York Central and Hudson River Railroad Company in 1886.
Northern Indiana Railroad: "The Northern Indiana Railroad Company was originally incorporated as the Buffalo and Mississippi Railroad Company under act of Legislature of Indiana, February 6, 1835. Name changed to The Northern Indiana Railroad Company February 6, 1837. Board of Directors organized February 21, 1837."
Peoria and Eastern Railway Company: Controlled by the Cleveland, Chicago, and St. Louis Railway Company after February 22, 1890, the P&E Railway Company had its roots in shipment and was one of only 3 railways for passengers and freight to Urbana, Illinois.
Schoolcraft and Three Rivers Railroad Company: This company was incorporated June 6, 1855 and would merge with the Kalamazoo and Schoolcraft Railroad Company in 1869.
Syracuse and Utica Railroad Company: The Syracuse and Utica Railroad Company, incorporated May 11, 1836.
Syracuse, Ontario and New York Railway Company: "July, 1890, the Syracuse Ontario and New York Railroad was operated as the Chenango branch of the West Shore Railroad, and on the second day of April, 1891, the railroad and property of The Syracuse Ontario and New York Railway Company were formally leased, for the term of its corporate existence, to the West Shore Railroad Company. On June 30, 1891, the entire capital stock of The Syracuse Ontario and New York Railway Company was surrendered to the West Shore Railroad Company."
Toledo and Ohio Central Railway Company: In June of 1885, this company was incorporated and gained the main line of the Ohio Central Railroad.
Utica and Schenectady Railroad Company - Incorporated April 29, 1833, and road opened August 1, 1836, and consolidated into The New York Central Railroad Company under the Act of 1853.
