Josiah L. Brown papers
Scope and Content
The Josiah L. Brown papers consists correspondence, medical orders and a bond spanning from 1862 through 1865. The first group of letters contains 10 letters, 20 pages in total, written by Brown to his wife, four letters from Libby prison and several from West Virginia during the American Civil War. A second group of 5 letters are from other soldiers, including one from Valentine McIntyre, brother of Mary Brown with an additional two pages to her from Dr. Brown. A third group consists of 12 documents by Army surgeons including of requisitions for medicines and General Orders for Doctors. Finally, there is a Confederate Bond.

Biography of Josiah L. Brown
Dr. Josiah L. Brown was born in New York and was thirty-three in the 1860 Census. He lived in Green Springs, Seneca County, Ohio, with his wife, Mary Brown (native of Massachusetts), and their two daughters, Alice and Lucina. Brown entered the military service on April 14, 1863 as Assistant Surgeon of the 116th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He was captured at the Second Battle of Winchester, Virginia, on June 15, 1863. He was imprisoned in Libby Prison, Richmond, Virginia, and released in early August 1863, but was ill and put into a hospital. He was returned to the Regiment on December 18, 1863 and he resigned on October 28, 1864.
