United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 716 collection
Scope and Content
The collection covers the years 1890-1975 and consists of minutes, correspondence, dues books and other financial records, along with printed matter from the International and affiliated councils.
General correspondence and the correspondence subject files, 1918-1975, are most central to the collection. They contain letters from members and other correspondence that outlines the Local's position in relation to various activities, affiliations, and organizations. These include: apprenticeship, councils, and the International. The notices remind the members of special meetings and issues of importance. The letters to elected officials record the Local's response to government policies. The printed correspondence consists of flyers from other unions, appeals from other organizations, and notices from outside agencies. The subject file of box 3 and box 4 contains printed matter relating to the organization and procedures of the Local.
The file of affiliations contains minutes, agreements, bylaws, working rules of different councils and associations of the UBCJA. These are followed with printed matter from the UBCJA, the Ohio State Council of Carpenters, and the Ohio AFL-CIO. Almost 1/3 of the material is printed matter from related activities. These are listed in boxes 9-13. Box 13 includes accessories to office such as the seal, stamp, gavel, and ballot box.
The minute books cover the years 1890-1975, excluding 1931-1941. They contain the most complete record of the union, including financial reports; acknowledgements of correspondence; report on members, apprentices, unemployment, sickness, initiation, death, change of address, and election of officers. The minutes also contain the membership's response to International decisions along with their own resolutions and actions.
The dues books, 1890-1956, record not only financial information but genealogical data as well. They contain the date of birth, residence, resignation or suspension, date of clearance cards issued for traveling, and pertinent information when a member was admitted from another location.
