Biography of Jeanette Grasselli Brown
Jeanette Grasselli Brown was born August 4, 1928 as Jeanette Gecsy in Cleveland, OH. She married Dr. Glenn R. Brown on August 1, 1987 and they currently live in Chagrin Falls, OH.
Ms. Grasselli Brown earned her BS (summa cum laude) in 1950 from Ohio University and her MS in 1958 from Western Reserve University. She attended the Executive Management School at the University of California at Berkeley in 1984. She has numerous honorary degrees in science, engineering and economics.
Ms. Grasselli Brown worked for BP America (The Standard Oil Company, SOHIO) from 1950 through 1988, served as a Distinguished Visiting Professor and Director of Research Enhancement at Ohio University from 1989 through 1995 and was a member of the Ohio Board of Regents from 1995 through 2008, serving as Chair of the Board from 2000 to 2002.
At BP she worked as a project associate in infrared spectroscopy; project and group leader and later manager in molecular spectroscopy; director of the Technology Support Department; and, the director of Corporate Research, Environmental & Analytical Sciences. Her research and professional interests include molecular spectroscopy - IR, Raman, NMR and surface techniques, analytical problem solving, spectra/structure relationships, combined techniques - separation/spectroscopy, academic/industrial interactions, careers in science and science education, importance of science and technology in the world, and encouragement of women and minorities in science.
Ms. Grasselli Brown has served on the corporate boards of AGA Gas, Inc., BDM International, Inc., BF Goodrich Company, Diatrac Holdings, Inc., USX Corporation, McDonald & Company Investments, and the Nicolet Instrument Corporation. She served on government boards of the Edison Biotechnology Center, Joint High Level Advisory Panel in Japan/US Science and Technology, the National Institute of Standards and Technology Visiting Committee, several boards and committees with the National Research Council/National Academy of Science, Canadian National Research Council advisory board for the Institute for Biodiagnostics, National Science Foundation advisory committee for Analytical Chemistry, Ohio Academy of Sciences, the U.S. Department of Energy advisory board for energy research, and the White Initiative on historically black colleges and universities science and technology advisory committee. Service with university boards include the external advisory board at the University of Southern Mississippi as well as the Board of Trustees, Foundation Board of Trustees, Ohio University Inn Board of Trustees, the Center for Groundwater Research Advisory Board, College of Arts and Sciences Board of Visitors and the Cutler Scholars Board - all at Ohio University.
Ms. Grasselli Brown has 80 publications in scientific journals and she has edited, co-edited or solo authored nine books. She has conducted 100 invited or plenary lectures, 100 graduate student seminars, made 600 talks to students and the general public and been on eight national speaker tours. She taught a two-week summer course at Bowdoin College, conducted technical assessment and consulting for the Shell Development Company, was on the editorial advisory board and edited "Letters from America" for the journal Spectroscopy, and was co-editor and on the editorial board of the journal Vibrational Spectroscopy. She also shares a U.S. patent. Ms. Grasselli Brown's professional activities include memberships in the American Chemical Society (Cleveland and national), the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society of Testing materials, the Coblentz Society, the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies, the Joint Committee on Atomic and Molecular Physical Data, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the Society for Applied Spectroscopy.
Ms. Grasselli Brown has been deeply involved with non-profit organizations, too numerous to list here, mostly in the Cleveland area and she has received a host of honors, awards and listings. Her hobbies and special interests include swimming, dancing, wind surfing, music, art and literature. For a full resume see Box 1, Folder 1.
