Peacock Coal Company ledgers
Scope and Content
The Peacock Coal Company collection includes two Payroll Ledgers, one spanning 321 pages and stretching from 1902 to 1906, and the other spanning 316 pages and stretching from 1909 to 1911. Both Ledgers include payroll accounts, which include but are not limited to: Employee names, amounts of material collected per employee, and deductions taken from each paycheck. There are also many “remarks” for each employee that vary in terms of content across both books. In addition to the Ledgers, the collection also contains: A blueprint for “Coal Crushing Handling & Storing Equipment”, an Employee Time Report Card, a Postcard from the United States Department of Commerce Bureau of Mines, a top piece of Ledger page (dated September 1st 1909) used for the Peacock Coal Company Pomeroy Dock Co. Landing, and a loose Ledger page (dated March 1912) for Pomeroy Dock Co.’s Landing report of Wharfage on boats and barges.

History of The Peacock Coal Company
The Peacock Coal Company was a coal company originating in the Pomeroy Bend area of Meigs County, Ohio. The company was owned by the Ebersbach family, a well known Pomeroy family in the late 19th and early 20th century, who also owned the Charter Oak Mine. The family owned both of these companies up until 1920.
