Pearl Rudy scrapbook
Scope and Content
The Pearl Rudy (PR) scrapbook was created by PR while she attended Ohio University in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Materials that can be found in this collection include dance cards, programs, fliers, and invitations, among several other items. The scrapbook dates from 1939 to 1943. Because of the deterioration of the scrapbook and its pages, these items were removed from their original pages and placed into folders during processing.
There are dance cards from formals such as the J-Prom, the Engineer's Ball, and various Greek life dances. The cards are placed into folders according to the year of the dance and arranged chronologically. One folder contains dance cards that have no identifiable date and is marked as "unknown dates."
There are also several event invitations. These invitations come from several different organizations but are mostly from Greek organizations. All of the invitations are addressed to PR and are for several different social events. Some of the invitations are simply designed but several others are more creative. One creative invitation is designed to look like a report card for an event called the Little Red Schoolhouse.
Other folders contain programs from events that Pearl attended. Many of the programs are from music concerts. Other programs include those for a dance recital, Mother's Weekend, Greek Week, and The Prep Follies. A separate folder holds programs for different graduation and commencement events. Included in these programs are booklets for graduation exercises, the commencement program, baccalaureate exercises, and the annual honors convocation.
There are also a couple folders that contain items from places Pearl visited. One of these folders is comprised of items from the Hotel Berry. One drink umbrella was marked as being from the famous hotel, and a small card that features mixed drinks on its front and the Hotel Berry name on the back can be found in this folder. Another folder contains items from The Catacombs in Columbus, Ohio. These items promote the tavern with interesting designs. One drink menu is in the shape of a woman wearing a jacket. Other items are a mustache advertising The Catacombs and a coffin shaped letter.
Several other folders contain unique items. One folder contains a date book from 1941. Almost every page of the book is filled with dates and holidays. Another folder contains one of PR's identification cards. The card features the only picture of PR in the entire collection. Several student registration cards can also be found in this collection and provide a look into the types of classes offered when PR attended school.
