French Alliance Scrapbook collection
Scope and Content
The French Alliance Collection consists of two scrapbooks dating from the beginning of Dr. Mary Noss's time at Ohio University until close to her retirement (1914-1957). Most of the documents are photographs of events, primarily performances of French plays.
The documents are dispersed between two scrapbooks, with no distinct order connecting the two. The first scrapbook, the larger of the two, includes information about theater productions; offering cast lists, and photographs of the performances. These include plays in which Dr. Noss participated. Information and programs from music performances, lectures, and charity programs are also a part of this scrapbook.
The second scrapbook is smaller, and is related to many of the same topics. However, besides including information about theater performances--which appear to have been the major activity of the group for much of its existence--the scrapbook also includes group portraits, newspaper clippings, and other materials about France and French-related activities at Ohio University.
Additionally, a third scrapbook has been received, and has been added to the collection. It is in generally good shape, and is cobalt blue. It contains photographs of the French Alliance members in their lives after Ohio University, including reunions at the Noss House. Also, there are a number of pictures of Dr. Noss in the late 1940s and the early 1950s. The pictures are labeled in French, and the ink has become somewhat hard to read. The fourth piece of the collection is an award from the French Minister of National Education. The award recognizes Dr. Noss as a member of the Order of the Palmes Academiques. Established by Napoloeon, the award is one of the most prestigious decorations that a scholar of French can receive.
The scrapbook materials are organized generally in chronological order throughout the books. Most of the materials are photographs, with some programs and newspaper clippings as well. The scrapbooks are in generally good condition, with all covers present. Though the glue or other affixing material has grown old, most pictures are still attached to the paper. No additional preservation efforts have been expended on these scrapbooks, and no materials have been removed.
