Margaret Catherine Lawless scrapbook
Scope and Content
The Margaret Catherine Lawless scrapbook contains photographs collected by Lawless during her time as a student at Ohio University from 1917 to 1919. Most of the materials in the scrapbook are photographs of campus life, including a number of pictures form outings led by Dean of Women Irma Voigt.
The photographs do not appear to follow any strict chronological order, though the scrapbook does end with a graduation program listing lawless. There may be a rough order, but with the absence of dates on most materials, chronology is difficult to distinguish. Comments are inscribed in white ink near photographs, offering some context. But in many instances, the ink has blurred or faded to near-illegibility. The cover of the scrapbook itself is black card paper, with black construction paper inside serving as the backing to which photographs are attached. Photographs included depict university buildings, events, and people who were apparently close to Lawless.
The scrapbook is in generally good condition, with all materials remaining affixed to the backing paper. The photographs themselves are sepia-toned silver gelatin prints, and have begun silvering. Nothing has been removed from the scrapbook, nor have preservation efforts been made to slow the slivering process.

Biography of Margaret Catherine
A native of Ironton, Ohio, Margaret Catherine "Kitty" Lawless graduated from Ohio University in 1919 with a two-year degree in Education. She was a member of "Squad A," and may have lived in Lindley Hall for her first Year. She probably resided in the Morrison Cottage for one year as well. Her sister, Eunice, also graduated from Ohio University in 1923.
As a student at Ohio University, Lawless joined the YWCA, went on numerous outings with her female peers, and attended at least three dances. She spent at least some time teaching or training to teach Kindergarten.
The 1937 Alumni Directory lists Lawless as being a 1931 graduate with a BS in Education.
