The Ohio League of Women Voters, Athens Chapter (OLWVA) records spans from 1949 to 1975 and documents the activities of this activist organization. The collection includes research papers, correspondence, newspaper article, state and national League of Women Voters (LWV) bulletins, and record books with great regard to the LWV's activities. The research studies undertaken by the OLWVA relate to local and state development. Approximately 150 publications of the LWV (state and national chapters) are contained in this collection.

History of Ohio League of Women Voters, Athens Chapter
The Athens Chapter of the Ohio League of Women Voters (OLWV) was formed in April 1949. Following a visit from Mrs. Frank Shaw, the President of the Ohio League of Women Voters, several Athens women formed a "provisional" League of Women Voters in Athens. The OLWV became active in many social and political activities where their main goal was to increase citizen awareness and involvement in local, state, and national affairs. The promotion of education and active involvement in community affairs, national and state issues, and political elections were the primary objectives of the OLWV.

Acquisition Information
The Ohio University Archives received the collection as a donation from three separate donors, all of whom represented an office of the League of Women Voters. Mrs. Maxwell Pullen (1972), Karen Harvey (1975), and Lois Whealey and Nancy Roe (1976) donated all of the materials.
Existence and Location of Copies
Ohio University will entertain requests to photocopy reasonable amounts of material from the collection for the convenience of individual researchers.
