J. P. Weethee journal of mineral land purchases for General Thomas Ewing
Scope and Contents
The J.P. Weethee journal of mineral land purchases for General Thomas Ewing spans from 1872 to 1882 and documents Weethee's life during this time period and his interactions with Ewing. The journal is one bound volume. It was likely bound while Weethee used it because there is writing on the inside front and back covers. The journal contents include copied out letters from Ewing to Weethee regarding mineral lands purchased in Dover and Trimble; journal entries of Weethee’s activities; and sermons and speeches written by Weethee.

Biographical note on J.P. Weethee
Jonathan Perkins Weethee was born on 6 August 1812, in Dover Township, Athens, Ohio, his father, Daniel Weethee, was 32 and his mother, Lucinda Wilkins, was 33. He married Ella Barber on 28 December 1887, in Columbiana, Ohio. Weethee graduated from Ohio University in 1832. For two years Weethee studied medicine under the private instruction of Dr. A. V. Medbery of Athens. During this time he became committed to religious activities. He later became an officer of the Atlantic and Lake Erie Railway Company, and returned to teaching several times, becoming the first president of Beverly College, and first superintendent of the Amesville Academy. In 1861 he founded the Weethee Academy, also known as Weethee College, which also doubled as his home, located in Mt. Auburn (now known as Millfield). The “academy” was built in the shape of a large cross, and included a girl’s dormitory, library, and dining room/living quarters for his family. Reportedly, only one woman, Mary Ellen Hedley, ever received a degree from the academy. He authored two books, and was an early and strong advocate for railways, brick roads, and coal mining. He died on 6 August 1899, in Athens, Ohio, United States, at the age of 87, and was buried in Athens, Ohio.
