DESCRIPTION:Chemistry Colloquium: Dr. Henri-Pierre Jacquot de Rouville \n\n
Dr. Henri-Pierre Jacquot de Rouville will be the guest speaker for the Chem
istry & Biochemistry Sept. 11th colloquium: Acridinium Recognition Units in
Complex Supramolecular Systems. Dr. Jacquot de Rouville is at the Institut
de Chimie de Strasbourg (UMR CNRS 7177)\, Université de Strasbourg\, Stras
bourg\, France\n\n \n\nAbstract:\n\nEquilibria involving multiple interacti
ng life components gave rise to complex assemblies (double helix of DNA\, G
-quadruplex secondary structures). In addition\, living organisms are endow
ed with numerous remarkable and complex functions (transmission of informat
ion\, chemical transformations\, transport\, regulation) mediated by physic
al and chemical stimuli. In consequence\, understanding and mimicking these
functions using switchable artificial supramolecular systems is of paramou
nt importance and still remains a current challenge.\nWe recently reported
bis-acridinium supramolecular receptors able to bind guest molecules (Figur
e 1). Surprisingly\, acridinium-based receptors are scarcely exploited in s
upramolecular chemistry despite their multi-responsive properties. Indeed\,
they respond to chemical and redox signals by reversibly modifying their s
hape\, their chemical and optical properties. This class of receptors exhib
its i) self-complementary behaviors leading to the formation of entwined di
mers\,1a ii) narcissistic self-sorting\,1b iii) -donor/-acceptor host-gue
st behaviors and were also studied as selective phase transfer agents in pe
rfluorocarbons. In addition\, the multi-switching properties of these recep
tors were investigated to alter their recognition events with guests. An in
creasing complexity has been achieved by the introduction of acridinium uni
ts in mechanically interlocked molecules. The dual-readout of the mechanica
l response of a [2]rotaxane structure was thus probed. Finally\, the combin
ation of the acridinium unit to another multi-responsive unit\, namely porp
hyrin core\, led to complex supramolecular systems exhibiting more than eig
ht different states.
