DESCRIPTION:The Contemporary History Institute hosts Dr. Seth Givens discus
sing “The Marine Corps and the Long Shadow of Vietnam\, 1965-2020” on Thurs
day November 7 at 5:00 p.m. in Bentley Hall 124.\n\n \n\nDr. Givens is a hi
storian at the United States Marine Corps History Division in Quantico\, Vi
rginia. He received both his Master of Arts in history (2010) and Ph.D. in
American military history (2018) from Ohio University. He also earned a Cer
tificate in Contemporary History from the Contemporary History Institute du
ring his time at OU\, and in 2014 was awarded CHI’s Baker Peace Fellowship.
He also serves on the Advisory Board of the Monuments Men and Women Founda
tion.\n\n \n\nHis areas of specialty are civil-military relations\, allianc
e politics\, and strategy and policy in World War II and the Cold War. He h
as studied civil-military relations at the end of wars\, particularly the c
ontact between troops and civilians and the ways in which militaries attemp
t to govern that interaction. This research led to Givens publishing on Ame
rican soldiers looting and souvenir hunting in Germany during World War II\
, research for which he won several awards. He has received funding support
from the U.S. Army\, German Academic Exchange Service\, Cantigny First Div
ision Museum\, and multiple presidential libraries. He has published on U.S
. policy\, strategy\, and military operations in the Cold War.\n\n \n\nThis
