DESCRIPTION:The Ohio University Alumni Association is excited to introduce
you to the next installment in our virtual series\, Empower Hour! This even
t takes place every other Wednesday from 1-2 p.m. EST.\n\n \n\nEmpower Hour
is a program that explores important and relevant topics centered around t
he theme of continued personal growth and education. We want to equip OHIO
alumni with the knowledge they need to become their best selves!\n\n \n\nTh
is Empower Hour segment is called "Practical Sustainability." Sustainabilit
y is a vitally important concept\, but is often misunderstood. Join practit
ioners of sustainability Jason Trembly and Greg Kremer as they discuss the
practical aspects of sustainability using as examples multiple projects fro
m Ohio University\, including coal plastic composites and international com
munity development.\n\n \n\nThis hour will highlight:\n - The many aspe
cts of sustainability\, and a method for thinking about practical sustainab
ility\n - Investigation of Coal Plastic Composite Materials As a Sustai
nable Building Material\n - The challenges of sustainability in interna
tional development projects\n - Other stories from personal and profess
ional experiences related to sustainable energy and the environment\n\n \n\
n\nGreg Kremer\n\n \n\nGreg Kremer began his career as a mechanical design
engineer for General Electric Aircraft Engines before pursuing his advanced
degrees. He joined Ohio University in 1998\, where he has been chair of th
e Department of Mechanical Engineering since 2006 and teaches the program’s
senior design capstone\, "Designing to Make a Difference." Kremer\, select
ed as a Carnegie Scholar for 2005-2006\, studies how to improve engineering
education and is leading a "Stacking the Deck" project to help students de
velop and tell stories aligned with the Department of Labor's Engineering C
ompetency Model. He has advised electric car racing teams and international
development projects focused on creating sustainable communities through c
lean water and job development. Since 2003 a solar and wind power system ha
s provided the majority of electric power for his family's home\, and he co
mmutes to school by bike year round.\n\n \n\n \n\n\nJason Trembly\n\n \n\nP
rincipal investigator for more than $18 million in competitively sponsored
research\, primarily for the U.S. Department of Energy \, Dr. Jason Trembly
is Russ Professor of Mechanical Engineering\, and a graduate faculty membe
r in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. He is also Di
rector of Ohio University’s Institute for Sustainable Energy and the Enviro
nment.\n\n \n\nPrior to joining OHIO in 2011 as an assistant professor\, Tr
embly was a leading young researcher at internationally recognized energy r
esearch centers. From 2007 to 2011\, he was a research chemical engineer an
d team leader for syngas and CO2 conversion at RTI International’s Energy T
echnology Division. There\, he was responsible for ideation and development
of processes and catalysts for conversion of syngas and CO2 into chemicals
and fuels. He is also a former ORISE Fellow at the U.S. DOE’s National Ene
rgy Technology Laboratory\, where he completed his graduate research focuse
d on solid oxide fuel cell development.\n\n \n\nTrembly’s research group ut
ilizes process simulation with materials R&D to develop intensified process
designs to address energy and environmental issues. His main research inte
rests include solid oxide fuel cells and electrolyzers\, electrochemical ca
pture of nutrients from waste streams\, produced water remediation\, and su
stainable composite materials.\n\n \n\n \n\nYou will receive a confirmation
email upon registration that will include details on how to join this virt
ual event.\n\n \n\nIf you have any questions\, please email Associate Direc
tor\, Alumni Experiences\, Caleb Beasecker at beasecker@ohio.edu.
