pin Interference: January 30\n\nIn quantum mechanics\, interference tradit
ionally occurs only between indistinguishable particles. In stellar intensi
ty interferometry\, this means measuring two photons of the same wavelength
(color)\, and in high energy experiments it means femtoscopic correlation
measurements must investigate pairs of identical particles (π+π+\, π-π- etc
.). However\, nearly a decade ago Cotler and Wilczek proposed a quantum dev
ice which utilizes entanglement to enable optical intensity interferometry
between photons of different wavelengths\, suggesting that certain forms of
entanglement make interference of non-identical quantum states possible. R
ecently\, a spin interference phenomenon was discovered in ultra-peripheral
heavy-ion collisions through photonuclear production of ρ0→π+π- pairs. In
this process interference is observed even though the final observation is
a π+π- pair - pions of clearly distinguishable charge. Besides its novelty
as a general quantum phenomenon\, this discovery of entanglement enabled sp
in interference in the angular distribution of ρ0→π+π- from diffractive pho
tonuclear interactions has opened new avenues for investigating the gluon d
istributions in heavy nuclei and for studying the structure of heavy nuclei
at high energy. \n\nIn this talk Dr. Brandenburg will review the experimen
tal discovery and goals of the ongoing experimental measurements from vario
us collaborations. Finally\, Dr. Brandenburg will discuss the emerging theo
retical description of this novel phenomenon and comment on the various the
oretical calculations that have appeared recently
