DESCRIPTION:INPP Seminar | Nov. 29\n\nThe Institute of Nuclear and Particle
Physics Seminar series presents Amy Lovell discussing "Uncertainty quantif
ication for Fission Modeling" on Nov. 29 at 4 p.m. in Lindley Hall 321.\n\n
\n\nLovell is from Los Alamos National Laboratory.\n\n \n\nIn-person semin
ars will be in Lindley 321. For remote seminars\, connection info for the v
ideo conference (TEAMS or ZOOM) and abstract of the talk will be communicat
ed by email before the seminar. The emails are sent to the inpp-seminar mai
ling list. To be added to this mailing list\, contact Prakash.\n\n \n\nThe
host is Charlotte Elster.\n\n \n\nAbstract: A significant amount of researc
h has gone into developing and improving uncertainty quantification methods
for nuclear theory\, particularly in moving beyond chi-squared calculation
s and covariance propagation\, quantifying truncation and model errors\, an
d developing emulators to apply these improved methods to computationally d
emanding calculations. Fission modeling presents a variety of challenges fo
r uncertainty quantification\, based on the time scales of the process\, th
e computational cost of the modeling\, and the large amount of information
– mostly on exotic\, neutron-rich nuclei – needed for calculations. In this
talk\, I’ll discuss some of our efforts at Los Alamos to consistently mode
l the emission of neutrons and gamma rays from excited fission fragments an
d a new project aimed at improving the optimization and uncertainty quantif
ication of the variety of correlated observables that are generated in fiss
ion events.
