DESCRIPTION:INPP Seminar | Constraining Nuclear Models from PREX and CREX D
ata on Lead-208 and Calcium-48 Neutron Skin Thicknesses\, Oct. 25\n\nThe In
stitute of Nuclear and Particle Physics Seminar series presents Tianqi Zhao
discussing "Constraining Nuclear Models from PREX and CREX Data on Lead-20
8 and Calcium-48 Neutron Skin Thicknesses" on Oct. 25 at 4 p.m. in Lindley
321.\n\n \n\nZhao is a post-doctoral researcher at Ohio University.\n\n \n\
nIn-person seminars will be in Lindley 321. For remote seminars\, connectio
n info for the video conference (TEAMS or ZOOM) and abstract of the talk wi
ll be communicated by email before the seminar. The emails are sent to the
inpp-seminar mailing list. To be added to this mailing list\, contact Praka
sh.\n\n \n\nThe host is Prakash.\n\n \n\nAbstract: Parity-violating electro
n scattering on Pb-208 and Ca-48 from JLab experiments (termed PREX and CRE
X\, respectively) have reported neutron skin thicknesses of 0.121(+0.35) (-
0.35) fm and 0.283 (+0.071) (-0.071) fm\, respectively. This data can shed
light on the isospin dependence of nuclear interactions in nuclei without t
he uncertainties associated with strong interaction probes.\n\nTo account f
or the reported data\, we have generated a few hundred thousand energy dens
ity functionals and calculated properties of finite nuclei\, infinite nucle
ar matter\, as well as of neutron stars. Our joint analyses of PREX and CRE
X data favor energy density funtionals with a large bulk symmetry energy S_
v=33(+6)(-7) MeV and a small symmetry energy slope parameter L at the nucle
ar equilibrium density\, which is in 2-sigma (95\%) tension with nuclear ma
sses and charge radii. This tension leads to a strong constraint on the L=4
2(+15)(-17) MeV. The posterior distribution is dominated by CREX data since
it rules out large L\, whereas the PREX likelihood function has a long tai
l which is compatible with small L. Joint analyses with neutron star constr
aints including the maximum mass\, tidal deformability\, and radius observa
tions slightly tighten the lower bound L to be 43(+15)(-11) MeV. Furthermor
e\, we find that our results agree nicely with previous neutron skin experi
ments\, dipole probabilities as well as with recent ab-initio calculations.
