To be added to this mailing list\, contact Prakash.\n\n \n\nThe host is Zach Meisel.\n \n \n\nAbstract:\n\nStellar explosions such as novae\, supernovae\, and X-r ay bursts involve thermonuclear reactions on rare isotopes. Interpretation of observations such as the light curves from X-ray bursts\, elemental abun dances\, or gamma-rays from nuclear decay as well as predictions of nucleos ynthesis are notably impacted by large uncertainties in the nuclear reactio n rates. Many of these reactions either have no experimental data available or have only been constrained indirectly.\n\n \n\nThe SECAR (SEparator for CApture Reactions) recoil separator\, recently commissioned at the Facilit y for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB)\, enables direct measurements of the releva nt proton- and alpha-capture reaction rates on proton-rich nuclei. SECAR ta kes advantage of radioactive beams produced by FRIB via projectile fragment ation\, which are then stopped\, and reaccelerated to low astrophysical ene rgies at the ReA3 facility. Reactions are studied in inverse kinematics by impinging the beam on a hydrogen or helium target in gaseous or solid form. The reaction recoils are counted at SECAR\, where a sequence of magnets an d Wien filters separate them from the unreacted beam.\n\n \n\nI will presen t the astrophysical motivation for SECAR's development\, the experimental p lans with FRIB and SECAR\, and the results from several experiments that ha ve been performed with SECAR during commissioning in 2021 and 2022.
