e first of three programs in a series about reproductive health is a discus
sion on the past\, present\, and future of reproductive rights from a medic
al perspective. This discussion around the medical side of reproductive hea
lth is Monday\, Oct. 17\, from noon-1:00 p.m. in the Women’s Center (403 Ba
ker).\n\n \n\nThere will be a panel including Dr. Jackie Wolf\, (professor
emeritus of social medicine\, that will examine the history of abortion bef
ore Roe v. Wade. Abortion was legal in early America. Not until the mid-19t
h century did politicians use anti-immigration sentiment to outlaw abortion
state-by-state. Wolf will discuss the historical relationship between the
outlawing of abortion and high maternal mortality and will describe the eve
nts just before Roe v. Wade that created a public consensus that abortion s
hould be legalized in every state. There will also be medical students from
Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine on the panel. Shivani Deshpande a
nd Amanda Burgess will talk about how Dobbs is impacting the training of me
dical doctors. They will also discuss what they see for the future of docto
rs and reproductive health training.
