DESCRIPTION:NQPI Seminar | Different Directions in Layered Materials\, Nov.
10\n\nThe Nanoscale and Quantum Phenomena Institute (NQPI) 's Seminar Foru
m series presents Joshua Goldberger discussing "Different Directions in Lay
ered Materials" on Nov. 10 at 4:10 p.m. in Walter 245.\n\n \n\nGoldberger i
s Professor of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at Ohio State University
.\n\n \n\nAbstract: Most electronic materials typically exhibit a single ma
jority carrier type\, either electrons or holes\, uniformly along all direc
tions of the crystal. These n-type and p-type regions are then integrated t
ogether to create virtually all modern electronic and energy-harvesting dev
ices. However\, layered materials have different orbitals involved in in-pl
ane and cross-plane bonding\, which can lead to either dominant n-type or p
-type conduction depending on the direction of conduction\, a phenomenon we
refer to as “goniopolarity”. Here\, we will establish the origin of this
exotic behavior and the chemical design principles for creating new goniopo
lar materials\, which has allowed us to experimentally expand the number of
known compounds with this phenomenon. Finally\, we will show how the inher
ent charge separation in goniopolar materials can be exploited to overcome
inefficiencies in electronic and energy harvesting technologies ranging fro
m thermoelectrics to photocatalysis.
