DESCRIPTION:The Ohio University History Association hosts a panel and scree
ning of the Summer of Soul on Wednesday\, Nov. 10\, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the
Athena Cinema on Court Street.\n\nThe Summer of Soul covers six weeks duri
ng the summer of 1969 in the United States when thousands of people attende
d the Harlem Cultural Festival to celebrate Black history\, culture\, music
\, and fashion.\n\nThe panel will include professors Chester Pach (History)
\, Jason Rawls (Education)\, and Andre Gribou (Fine Arts). They will contex
tualize the history of the film in the 1960s (Black history and music histo
ry)\, examine the film through a lens of hip-hop culture\, and discuss the
making of artistic films.\n\nThe event is free and open to all OHIO affilia
tes and Athens community members. Doors open at 5:30\, and seating is first
-come\, first-served. Per Athena's policy\, guests must bring proof of vacc
ination and wear masks inside the facility.
