OCOM 7030 - Addiction, Pain and Palliative Care
This two-week course will introduce students to topics related to addiction, pain, and palliative care. Addiction topics include abuse of and dependence on alcohol, prescription drugs, illicit drugs and other addictions. Pain and palliative care topics will address chronic pain, palliative care and hospice. Students will be presented with a holistic approach to comprehensive pain and symptom management and be given tools to help care for patients from a primary care approach. A solid foundation in the management of addiction, pain and end of life care will be a crucial component of medicine that students will find very helpful in their personal and professional lives.
Course Outcomes

- Learn how to conduct a thorough pain assessment.
- Learn how to facilitate discussions regarding medical futility and conflict.
- Learn how to facilitate discussions with patients/families regarding goals of care.
- Recognize and identify coping mechanisms to deal with stress and burnout in caregivers and health professionals.
- Recognize and treat common symptoms in palliative care.
- Recognize and treat different types of chronic pain problems.
- Recognize and treat palliative care emergencies.
- Recognize normal and abnormal grief.
- Recognize other non-drug abuse.
- Recognize the importance of spirituality and cultural diversity in medical care.
- Understand addiction in adults, pregnancy and the elderly.
- Understand addiction in professionals.
- Understand and recognize addiction.
- Understand issues dealing with chronic pain and addiction.
- Understand the drugs of abuse.

- Understand the importance of the team concept, including the patient and family.
