PBIO 1150 - Plant Structure and Development


For plant biology and other science majors, preprofessional students and science modular students. Introduction to structure, growth, development, and reproductive biology of plants with emphasis on flowering plants.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to explain why scientific names and classification systems are important.
  • Students will be able to interpret phylogenetic trees in order to understand evolutionary relationships and trait evolution.
  • Students will be able to describe and compare the steps in the major life cycle types found in eukaryotes.
  • Students will be able to describe key features that define the embryophytes (land plants).
  • Students will be able to recall, identify, compare, and assess the homology of the characteristic structures in major plant groups.
  • Students will be able to explain the steps in the life cycles of representative members of major plant groups.
  • Students will be able to recognize and describe the cells, tissues, and tissue systems of vascular plants and explain their functions.
  • Students will be able to describe the function, structure, growth, development, and modifications of the organs of the vascular plant body.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in the use of compound and dissecting microscopes.
